              Letter from Pauli to Dyson
              Letter-1978 · Pièce · 1955/01/14
Fait partie de Archives of Wolfgang Pauli

Pauli replies to a letter by Dyson that was dealing with the Källén Formula and general problems of renormalization. He emphazises that not every mathematical solution of the renormalized field theory must have a physical letter from Pauli to Lee gives some remarks to a paper by Lee, especially on the consequences of coupling-constant renormalization and about the occurrance of negative probabilities.

              Letter-1979 · Pièce · 1955/01/16
Fait partie de Archives of Wolfgang Pauli

Pauli says that he has written a first version of his Mainz lecture about 'relation metaphysics' (Heilserkenntnis). He discusses some ideas on the subject, citing among others E. A. Burtt's "The Metaphysical Foundations on Modern Science" and B. Russell's "History of Western Philosophy".

Fait partie de Archives of Wolfgang Pauli

Thirring agrees with Pauli's formula obtained from the Thirring model. He discusses Pauli's remarks on mass renormalization in this model.

Pauli writes on the difficulties of field quantization in the light of Lee's and Heisenberg's latest model. A new idea of how "ghosts" could be excluded from the theories the real value of e$^{2}$/(h.c) should give rise to a "Kombnationsverbot" between "ghosts" and "non-ghosts".

Fait partie de Archives of Wolfgang Pauli

Heisenberg replies to Pauli's question as regards the "Hilbert-space II" formalism, and the commutation relations on the light-cone. He also speculates about the importance of e$^{2}$/h.c.

Fait partie de Archives of Wolfgang Pauli

Pauli sends a list of people to whom preprints of their paper should be sent. He comments the reaction of Heisenberg and his pupils to the paper.

Bohr's reply to Pauli's letter of the 15th February. He explains his use of the phrase "detached observer" and writes on the necessity to clarify the terminology.

Pauli writes on the non-physical ("pathological") solutions of quantum electrodynamics in case of strict validity of Lorentz-invariance. The mathematical consequences of this: "ghosts" and macroscopic acausalities and the postulate that for large photon- and quantumnumbers of electrons the classical theory must result as limiting case of quantum electrodynamics. One has to look if the equations of quantum electrodynamics have solutions which fulfil these three consequences.
