Letter from Pauli to Jauch
Letter-2965 · Item · 1958/04/09
Part of Archives of Wolfgang Pauli

Pauli writes about his renouncing the partnership with Heisenberg. He thinks there are mistakes in Heisenberg's integration of his equation. Futher, if one attempts to loosen either the causality or the unitarity of the metric, this leads to disastrous results in relativistic theories. His impression is that one has to wait for new physical ideas, because mathematical virtuosity alone cannot lead to the discovery of new laws of nature.

Pauli comments on calculations made by Jauch. He writes of a letter from Bhabha (Bangalore) about the spin of the mesons. He comments on rumours about Heisenberg's idea of a fundamental length. Pauli is sceptical because he sees no connection with the atomicity of the electric charge.

Pauli discusses the problem of the singularity of the V-operator. His criticism applies also to the case of strong coupling in pair-theory.

Pauli thanks Jauch for Jauch's and Rohrlich's book and says that he likes it. He gives some comments on a few passages. He writes about recent publications on field quantization.

Pauli writes about the necessity for continuation of his leave from Zürich. He writes about the possibilities for non-American physicists to get jobs in the U.S.A., because many Americans are busy with defense work. He writes about his paper with Dancoff on strong coupling in the pseudo-scalar meson theory and about his correspondance with Dirac on his efforts to remove divergences in quantum electrodynamics. He comments on Scherrer's attitude to theoretical physics.

Pauli thinks that Lopes' results on the interaction energy-matrix in momentum space are correct. He comments on a paper by Schönberg. He agrees to Jauch's plan to work on the life-time of isobars. He writes about recent results of investigations in Sweden.
